The highlight of South African living is the breakfast, desserts, snacks and drinks.  Easy to thrill anyone.  Breakfast varies between “mieliepap” and “beskuit”.  “Mieliepap” is similar consistency as polenta and served that has a teaspoon of sugar, butter and milk.  A great creamy and healthy breakfast to determine you through the a . m ..  “Beskuit” is rusks, dough baked inside oven, broken apart then places in the oven to dry out.  The perfect breakfast, specially for those living on farms, is selfmade rusks, dunked into the morning coffee.  If you might be much more of a tea lover, try the great local herbal tea called “rooibos”

Through the morning you can chew on some “biltong” which is salty dried meat or “droëwors”, and that is dried sausage.  You are unable to watch any rugby or cricket match without salty snack.  By it is currently time for additional coffee served with banana, ginger of mealie bread, smeared with butter.  Mealie bread can be a sweet bread, baked with sweet corn.  You probably will wonder why we’ve got this dependence on mealies?  Well, mealies basically are Africa’s staple food.  We use it to make breakfast, bread, crisps (or chips) and many other.

Once you finish this, the time is right on your main meal through the day.  And then a BEST course arrives, the dessert.  Most puddings are baked pies served with custard and frozen treats or perhaps a special sauce.  Malva pudding is amongst the old time favourites, an incredible, sweet tasting spongy apricot dessert which has a lovely sweet sauce.  Cottage pudding is a cake pudding served using a special white wine sauce.

Prefer a colder dessert, this is actually the destination for a be.  Enjoy an innovative fruit salad with soft ice cream, constructed from local seasonal fruit.  The most famous fruits are grapes, apples, naartjies (a kind of tangerine), peaches, apricots, mangoes, melons and many more.  There is absolutely nothing more refreshing over a fresh fruit salad.  If you enjoy soft serve ice cream, you will discover foods available for you also.  Try the watermelon or papaya flavoured soft serve ice cream within a cone or alone.

As a special treat, why don’t you try a Dom Pedro?  This is soft ice cream with some drop of milk and also a shot of the favourite whiskey of liqueur.  Try Amarula liqueur, made out of the potent marula fruit or van der Hum liqueur, made from fresh naartjies.  This is really a treat it’s not necassary to pass on.

Later manufactured you can savor some “koeksisters”, an extremely sweet delicacy.  Afrikaans “koeksisters” are twisted pastries, deep fried then sweetened that has a very sweet sauce.  Another favourite of mine is “ystervarkies”, a sponge cake, dunked in a house made chocolate sauce, rolled in coconut!  Doesn’t that merely sound magnificent?

Should you prefer something less sweet, try the “melktert” (milk tart).  This is a milk-based tart, absolutely gorgeous if you consume it warm, equally it really is made.  If you would like something savoury, try the “souttert” (savoury tart) consisting mostly of vienna sausages, cheese, onions, herbs and egg.

For your evening get ready to experience one the top known foods, “vetkoek”.  This is usually a treat.  You can take advantage of “vetkoek” in 3 ways.  Dunk it as part of your tea, butter with syrup and cheese or filled with curry mince.  No matter what kind you choose, you won’t be disappointed.  If you want something smaller, try the “plaatkoekies” (much like crumpets) served with marmite or syrup or even try some pancakes with cinnamon sugar?

During the day you’ll never go thirsty.  If you prefer warm drinks, you will discover the various different types of strong coffees, regular tea, “rooibos” tea, hot cocoa and the best, milo.  This is an excellent drink full of nutritional supplements, made using warm or cold milk.  If that suits you cold drinks, try the various ice teas and fruit juices.  Guava, orange, grinadella, fruit cocktail, grape, peach, pear, apple, apricot and mango are only a few choices you’ve got in fruit drinks.  Guava and mango should be a couple of essentially the most loved choices.

If you’re looking for a bottle of champange to accompany you meals, you can find countless local Cape wines to select from.  You will probably be spoilt for choice.  Make sure you attempt just as much as you may and relish the hospitality while you’re see the rainbow country, South Africa.
